Jewellery Maintenance

Jewelry-maintenance

Besides taking care of clothes and shoes, do not forget about your jewellery. The better care you take, the longer you can enjoy it. This article will provide practical advice and tips on how to store and treat jewellery.

Proper storage

Store your jewellery in a dry place away from direct sunlight. A jewellery box is ideal: with every piece having its dedicated place to prevent damage by getting in contact with other items. For long-term storage, we recommend recloseable and air-tight plastic bags.

Avoid hanging pearl necklaces etc, instead, place them on a flat surface to prevent the string on which pearls are put from damage. Pearls should not be stored in direct sunlight, in high-temperature areas or an extremely dry environment. It is best to store them in a jewellery box so that they are not damaged/scratched by other metal jewellery.

When to take your jewellery off

The simplest rule we advise is to put your jewellery on as the last before leaving your home and to take it off first when you return. This approach will keep it shiny for a long time and the stones will stay radiant.

If you are going to the pool, sauna, sea, to have a massage or thermal bath, we recommend taking off all silver jewellery, but also golden jewellery with pearls and gems. Avoid contact with chemicals and cleaning agents that accelerate the oxidation of silver or may damage the jewellery. Likewise, you shouldn't wear rings and bracelets when working in the garden.

The surface of the pearls is sensitive and fragile. Improper handling can damage or peel the mother-of-pearl layer or dull the lustre. The rule they are the last thing to put on before leaving home (only after you have applied all cosmetics and perfumes) holds true for pearls in particular. However, wearing pearls against the skin is good for them.

Cleaning and maintenance

Jewellery with a surface finish, ie rhodium-plated gilded, can be polished with a microfibre cloth for cleaning glasses or lenses, or a fine cotton fabric. Do not use silver solutions to clean surface-treated and patinated jewellery as these could damage their patina. You can clean silver and golden jewellery that is not rhodium-plated using solutions designed for this purpose, or polish it with a specially soaked cleaning cloth.

Avoid any lay "guaranteed" advice to avoid possible damage to the jewellery. However, if you still want to clean it with what you have at home, you are recommended to apply a gentle bath in soapy water, then rinse the jewellery thoroughly and dry with a cloth.

Care for pearls

Pearls should not come into contact with detergents, alcohol, vinegar, fruit juices and the like. You can clean them with a special solution designed particularly for pearls or with a soft clean sponge soaked in soapy water. Apply the sponge lightly to individual pearls, never scrub them. If the string breaks, you are advised to approach experts and have your pearls restrung by them.

If the rhodium layer is damaged, you can have the jewellery re-plated. The mechanically strained jewellery parts, as well as the placement of the stones, should be checked, or adjusted or repaired by a goldsmith. From time to time, we recommend having rhodium-plated jewellery professionally cleaned with ultrasound to remove also subtle grime. However, ultrasonic cleaning is not suitable for jewellery with natural gemstones. It is better to leave the cleaning of heavily soiled or oxidized jewellery to experts. We will be happy to professionally clean or repair our jewellery for you.
